Real Weddings: Toby & Glenn

It brings us pure joy to create a work of art that will play an integral role in a couple’s wedding and marriage, and every so often Team Ketubah comes across a couple that we truly bond with. We are beyond excited to share with you the fun details of their wedding and the story behind their happily-every-after — it touched our hearts deeply and we are positive it will do the same for you as well!

After hearing that Glenn proposed to Toby in Argentina, we connected with them RIGHT away! I mean — what’s more romantic than getting engaged in breathtaking Mendoza?

Glenn and Toby met as most couples do — through a mutual friend. Getting together to watch the Notre Dame college football game, their bar was filled with “more than a thousand fans going crazy when Michigan beat its big rival at the last second of the game.” Sounds exciting!

If you couldn’t tell — both Glenn and Toby are both BIG University of Michigan fans! Toby told us all about how her family has gone to the lake in Northern Michigan (where the Alumni Association owns a camp) for the last 25 years. For two of those summers Glenn has joined Toby and her parents — “…When Glenn not only survived but loved the Camp experience, we knew he was a keeper!

Knowing that they both were engaged in wine country Mendoza, Argentina, we had to ask — what was the engagement like?

Glenn orchestrated a lovely day with a private driver touring wineries in Mendoza and popped the question at Cavas Wine Lodge. The vineyard and views of the Andes were spectacular… As they walked back toward the lodge, they were greeted with cheers from other onlookers, sparkling wine and an enormous bouquet of gorgeous flowers. They enjoyed a delicious multi course meal from a private table and relaxed by the pool in the sunshine for part of the afternoon…

As part of our TINAK Team is from Argentina (as well as having spent time in Buenos Aires), we loved being able to connect on that point! Toby continued to tell us all about their big day and the presentation of their Ketubah to their friends and family…

We do love our Ketubah and received many compliments on both its unique and beautiful artwork, and wording during the wedding. We had the Rabbi explain how we were engaged in Argentina and how this Ketubah connects us to our experiences there.

The Around Jerusalem Ketubah

As most of Toby and Glenn’s guests were also alumni of the University of Michigan, they decided to incorporate Michigan traditions into the event. From the wedding party wearing the school’s colors, to a band playing the school fight song — they went all out! As a cute surprise for Glenn, Toby told us about a song she wrote just for him, “it was a take-off of the old Cole Porter classic ‘You’re The Top’ with new lyrics…”

All we can say is: Amazing!

From Team Ketubah to Toby and Glenn — we were so honored that you chose us to create something that would play such an integral role in your wedding and life. You were a complete pleasure to work with and we couldn’t have been more overjoyed to see that you loved your Ketubah and it was everything you dreamed of. We wish you both a lifetime of excitement, happiness, and love!

Oh Canada, Our Home and Native Land!

Here at Team Ketubah, we love Canada. For many, many reasons.

First, one of our founders lived there for a long-time (should out to Victoria BC!) and another one of us has only taken oh, 30 or 35 trips there over the course of his life.

Secondly, Canada has been historically very friendly to the Jews. It has no history of oppressor nor expulsion nor significant anti-Jewish laws the way almost every other country in the western world does.

Third, the Jews of Canada — overall, on average — tend to be much more into the Jewish traditions than the Jews of the USA. We’ve found they tend to have more traditional upbringings, use more ketubahs, preserve a lot of the old-fashioned awesome side of Judaism, more than most American Jews do. Interestingly, even the Jews of Canada who intermarry, still get ketubahs, with an interfaith ketubah!

Canada: we love you. We’d love to create lots and lots of Ketubahs for all Canadian Jews!!!

Real Weddings: Sarah & Jesse Thomas

It brings us pure joy to create a work of art that will play an integral role in a couple’s wedding and marriage, and every so often Team Ketubah comes across a couple that we truly bond with. We are beyond excited to share with you the fun details of their wedding and the story behind their happily-every-after — it touched our hearts deeply and we are positive it will do the same for you as well!
Not only was working with Sarah and Jesse on their Ketubah an absolute pleasure, but their beautiful love story and happily every after is like something out of a dream! With Sarah working for the U.S. Department of State and Jesse at the Canadian Embassy, we were begging to know — how did they both meet?!
My good Canadian friend, who I went to graduate school at Syracuse University, invited me to an event at the Embassy. At the event, she introduced us, and the rest is history…
Sarah spilled to us how much they love taking walks around Washington D.C., so it was no surprise that Jesse planned a romantic proposal at a beautiful lookout spot in Georgetown…
Jesse popped the question when we stopped at Book Hill. I said yes, and following in the footsteps of my parents who have been married for over 35 years, we carved our initials in a tree on the hill.
Sarah went on to tell us about their big day…
Surrounded by our closest family and friends, we ate, drank, laughed, and danced the weekend away. We entered the reception dancing to Notorious BIG’s “Hypnotize,” and everyone, from the little ones to the grandparents, made their mark on the dance floor throughout the evening.
Their wedding sounded (and looked!) absolutely wonderful — filled with excitement, warmth, and love. We absolutely adore how the Ketubah matched the overall ambiance of the wedding!

As if the proposal and wedding wasn’t beautiful enough, they had just about the most exciting honeymoon EVER. Where did they adventure to? “We honeymooned in Spain and Portugal… The whole experience was amazing! The views at Montserrat were breathtaking and the paella was delicious!”
Their favorite moment from the honeymoon?
One morning… we woke up early and drove to Montserrat, a beautiful Benedictine monk mountain retreat about an hour from Barcelona. Instead of spending a whole day leisurely exploring the site, we hiked up to the Sant Jeroni summit of Montserrat as fast as we could, ran back down the mountain, and drove back to the small town near Barcelona we were staying in, so we could enjoy the special of the day — paella — by 2:00 pm at a local mom-and-pop restaurant that we first visited for delicious tapas upon arriving in Spain.
We couldn’t think of a better experience to mark the beginning of a Happily Ever After! From our Team at TINAK HQ to Sarah and Jesse — we wish you both a lifetime of happiness. We were so honored to create something so meaningful for your special day. We hope every time you look at your Ketubah it fills you with excitement, warmth, and most importantly, love.

Only The Best Ketubahs. Period.

Most Ketubah shops have a whole variety of ketubahs, from all along the spectrum, from the cheapest to the most luxurious — trying to please everyone and anyone.

Team Ketubah — the guys and girls behind This is Not a Ketubah, Yes it is! — has a different philosophy:

Only the Best Ketubahs. Start, end, finish. No ifs, ands, or buts.

And of course, top notch service as well, so you enjoy every moment of the process!

If you want a large selection of mediocre Ketubahs — we’re not the place to look. But if you want a smaller selection of supremely awesome ketubahs, then lets talk!

And the phrase “supremely awesome” is a great phrase. Much better than the recently-overused word “awesome”!

Have any Ketubah questions or want to see some more? Just say hi!

Want a Sports Ketubah?

One of our favorite types of Ketubahs to create is…. a sports ketubah

Love Baseball? Love the Yankees? Love Yankees Stadium?

Name your sport, name your team, name your stadium — or name your favorite player or number or favorite any-aspect of it.

Here at This is not a Ketubah, Yes it is we believe that your Ketubah should represent your passions and what unites you two as a couple. And if it is your favorite team — then that’s so perfect.

And name your sport: Baseball, football, basketball, soccer, hockey — you name it, we’ll do it!

Yes, it’s true: I’m a die-hard Mets fan. But if you love the Yankees, we’d still love to create the Perfect Ketubah for you two :)

Fingerprint Ketubahs Are Here!

You know what our new favorite thing in the world is?

Fingerprint Ketubahs!!

A few couples have recently asked us to create Ketubot, so that their friends and family can fingerprint it.

It’s been a spectacular success. We love it, the couples love it, it’s so cool!

This is a great way to expand your Ketubah beyond just your Rabbi and Witnesses signing it, and bring in the family and friends closest to you.

And this also makes for a spectacular piece of art to hang in your home — that is much more personal than just some awesome piece of art you buy!

Sound interesting? Want more information about a Fingerprint Ketubah? Just ask! Nina would love to tell you all about our Fingerprint Ketubahs!!! Just call or email Nina!

Interfaith Ketubahs: The Good, The Bad, and the Not-So-Ugly

Here at This is not a Ketubah, Yes it is, we create a lot of interfaith Ketubahs. We’re big fans of them. Our general viewpoint is: if makes couples happy, then we support it!

One question we often get is, do interfaith ketubahs satisfy the requirements of the Jewish law?

Our answer is….

First, Jewish law — unlike that of most other religions — is deeply decentralized. Every rabbi has his or her own opinion. So the key question above all is: what does your rabbi say? Since there is no central governing authority, if your rabbi supports it — then we support it, too. Of course, some rabbis will sign interfaith ketubahs — and others won’t.

Secondly, the closest that we come to having a centralized authority of ketubot is, what the government of Israel says. The government of Israel, as of today, doesn’t yet accept them. (This is due to the strong influence of the ultra-orthodox on the Israeli government.)

The only practical consequence of this is, if both of you want to make Aliyah and get Israeli citizenship. Then it might be a bit hard.

Note that, this is changing, slowly but surely. There is now a bill in the Knesset to allow for secular weddings in Israel, and to similarly allow secular clergy to perform weddings and sign ketubahs. Thus, in the not-distant future, this might even be a realistic possibility!

In conclusion, our suggestion is: the best strategy is to find the right rabbi. If your rabbi isn’t super over-the-top enthusiastic about your wedding — then it’s probably not the rabbi for you! There are thousands, probably tens of thousands, of rabbis out there, and so many of them are wonderful. (Unfortunately, there’s one-too-many less-than-wonderful rabbis out there: but c’est la vie.) You just want to find the right one for you two!

If you want any help finding the right rabbi — just ask us! We know hundreds!

By the way, you might want to check out our partner, Interfaith Ketubahs for some awesome interfaith ketubahs there, too!
