David Beckham has a Ani L’Dodi Tattoo?!

As Ketubah lovers, we love seeing bits of Jewish tradition and culture in everyday life. We recently stumbled across this photo of David Beckham:

davidbeckham-mybeloved

and of course the first thing that jumped out at us… his Ani L’Dodi tattoo! Among his many tattoos, David Beckham got Ani L’Dodi in Hebrew tattooed on his arm — and it’s no coincidence that it’s right next to the tattoo of his wife, Victoria Beckham. :)

Ani L’Dodi (I am my Beloved, and my Beloved in mine) is a phrase commonly seen on tons of different Ketubahs — everything from super Orthodox Ketubahs to even more modern styles. Many couples that we’ve worked with in the past have even specifically asked to add that phrase into their Ketubah. Such a beautiful and powerful phrase to say to the person you love… it even resonates with those who aren’t of Jewish heritage!

After seeing David Beckham’s tattoo, we were curious to see how many celebrities throughout the world have Hebrew tattoos — and there were a TON! Who knows what reason they have for getting a Hebrew tattoo, but we’d like to think that they find beauty in such an old and culturally rich language. :)

All that to say — it’s awesome to see the impact of Jewish culture and Hebrew language throughout the world! We get so excited when couples come to us wanting a Ketubah and requesting something in Hebrew with a language translation, whether it’s in English, Spanish or even Chinese! There’s nothing quite like a stunning Ketubah to represent the joining of two people’s lives, styles, and even cultures.

If we had to guess, Victoria and David Beckham probably didn’t have a Ketubah for their wedding day, but if they did we can imagine what phrase they would be asking for!

Conservative Text with Lieberman Clause? You Betcha!

One of the most common questions we get is, “Do you have the Conservative Text with the Lieberman Clause, on your Ketubot?” and our response is, “Yes!” — a rounding, “Yes!!”.

Now, lets explain in detail.

First, our big vision is to make sure that we can find your perfect Ketubah text. Your rabbi wants a particular text — we’ll get it!

Second, the conservative text with the Lieberman Clause is our most popular text. So we’re very familiar with it.

Third, what the &!@#(! is it? Let me explain. It’s the traditional Ketubah text that Jews have used for thousands of years, but with one change. The conservative movement in the US didn’t like some of the provisions in the contract — because it gave men more rights in getting a “get” (divorce) than women — so a rabbi at JCS named… wait for it… Rabbi Lieberman added in a clause, that women can equally initiate a divorce. So, this text is basically: the traditional text but with this added sentence.

Sound like it’s on target for you? We’d love to create a conservative ketubah for you, using the Lieberman clause!

Vinyl Ketubahs: Put your First Song you dance to on your Ketubah!

Close-up View of a Phonograph

We’re proud to launch our newest product: Ketubahs on Vinyl.

Yes, you heard it correctly. A vinyl record. We’ll put your favorite song onto the record, and engrave your Ketubah on the entire record itself. And yes, it will still play your song — if you have a record player.

(Everyone’s first question is: is that a valid ketubah? and our response is: this is why we ALSO send you a paper copy, just to be 100% kosher!).

You can hang the Vinyl on your wall, play it, add it to your record collection, be a hipster. Endless possibilities.

But why would anyone want a Vinyl Ketubah? Oh, here are some possible reasons:

  • It’s fun!
  • No one’s every done it before
  • Music + Ketubah = Magic
  • Hanging a record on your wall
  • Using the first song you dance to IN your Ketubah itself!

Want to learn more? See our Ketubahs on Vinyl page, or send us an email to ask for more information!

Here at Team Ketubah, we love music. Especially Serge Gainsbourg and music from the early 1960s — precisely the era when record players were at their height! Sometimes we talk about getting a record player for our office. But now, with Vinyl Ketubot… it’s becoming a necessity!

Something about music speaks to the human soul — and it’s wonderful to capture that in the Ketubah itself, and in a way of creating the Ketubah. The music shouldn’t just be in your memory, or in a wedding video no one watches — but a deeper part of your life. Something you see every day. Such as, a Ketubah you hang on your wall, that contains the song itself.

Drop us a line if you want to know more!

PS: Wow I can’t believe how much interest there is in this! So exciting!

Want a Quirky Ketubah?

We pride ourselves on a couple of things — amazing customer service, for example! — but above all, we pride ourselves on, our quirkiness.

Yes, quirkiness. That is a word that is very underused these days. We want to bring it back!

We’re quirky people. We create quirky art. We work with quirky couples.

In fact, we love quirky couples.

If you’re a generic, boring couple — we’re probably not for you. There are lots of other Ketubah artists whom we would recommend, who will produce high quality, beautiful Ketubot for you guys.

But…

But if you’re a bit different, then we’re for you.

Not unique like an Apple ad, where everyone is unique IN THE SAME EXACT WAY. Show you’re unique by wearing our white headphones–just like everyone else does.

Not unique like the alternative music scene… which everyone listens to, so it’s not really “alternative” anymore, is it?

But unique like, well, you two are just in your own universe.

Are you two obsessed with 1950s French music?* That’s seriously random. Lets talk!

Are you two having a Dr Seuss-themed wedding? That’s over the top. Lets talk!

Are you two having a non-wedding? I always think we should have non-weddings instead of weddings. Weddings have just gotten so commercialized–lets rebel against the commercialization. Lets talk!

Are you two having a wedding in five different languages, combining three religious traditions, on a lost island somewhere? Lets talk!

I mean, you can go buy a generic Ketubah off the shelf — even off of our shelf! We’ll love it, we’ll appreciate it, and it’ll be great.

But, when in your life is your unique personality going to come through if not at your wedding?

This is one reason why, we really love working with couples on commissioned ketubot, and also by tweaking and changing the art on one of our current ketubahs (to make it your favorite color; or to change the couples to look more like you two; or to add in this symbol) is so that your ketubah can be a truly unique, quirky piece of art that represents you two and your love and commitment to each other.

Are you quirky enough? Let us know!

From the Archives: The Ketubah that Started It All

77613_459954591497_6665940_o

Wow. Going through old photos, I found…. the photo of the Ketubah that Yael created for my wedding — the one that led to the birth of Tinak Ketubahs!

If only I knew then, what I know now….!

Who knew that, two years later, I would be spending all my time obsessing over Ketubah ketubah ketubahs!!!! I had no clue what was in store for my life :)

To be honest, I don’t even remember that moment or the Ketubah — the entire day is such a blur. I do remember the gossip (this friend hooked up with that friend!) and I do remember the sea of orange, but that’s about it.

Désormais en Français: C’est une Kétouba

We have a happy announcement: we have just launched a ketubah website for TINAK… in French. Anyone in France or Montreal (or anywhere in Quebec… or anywhere else they speak French. Are there Jews in Senegal?) — we have a great source of ketubot for you!

Check out our new site here: C’est une Kétouba!

The name, C’est une Kétouba, is French for, “It’s a Ketubah!”. Yes, it’s the opposite of our (ironic) name, “This is not a Ketubah” — but we decided that with our French couples, it would be clearer and easier to be very direct and explicit. And cheesy!

Parlez-Vous Français? Take a look at C’est une Kétouba!

We Shipped our First Ketubah to… Singapore

We have just shipped our first Ketubah to… Singapore.

We are always excited to send one of our Ketubahs to a new country for the first time.

One of our goals is to create a Ketubah for the one Jew in every country. There’s one Jew in Indonesia? We’d love to create your Ketubah. There’s one Jew in Madagascar? We’d love to create your Ketubah!

Going one country at a time, we’d love to create a Ketubah for each and every Jew everywhere.

Singapore is particularly excited. I’ve personally been fascinating by Singapore for years and have wanted to go there. Its organization and efficiency seems to be the opposite of Latin America — a case study in contrasts.

When I do go, I’ll be sure to call our couple there :)

A TINAK First: We Made a Ketubah in German!

We have created (and offer to our couples) Ketubot in many languages, from the traditional Aramaic to French, Chinese, and everything in-between.

And we’re proud to now offer a Ketubah in…. German!

Having studied the German language for many years (and one of my all-time favorite pieces of writing being Mark Twain’s analysis of the German language) I think German is wonderful. Yes, there was a deeply evil event almost a century ago — and here at Tinak, we believe that, if we were to boycott and hate everyone who ever hurt the Jews, we would have no one to talk to.

We have taken the German text, and added it to our standard text offerings.

Let us know if you want a Ketubah in German!

Great dates for weddings, all!

Some dates that are NOT great for Jewish weddings:

  • Purim
  • The High Holy Days
  • Fridays (before Shabbat)
  • Shabbat
